Shopify vs a Custom Website: Which Is Right for an Indian Business?

An honest comparison of Shopify and a custom-built website for Indian businesses: monthly costs, payments, flexibility, ownership and when each makes sense.

The short answer

Shopify is a good choice when you mainly sell standard products online, want to launch quickly and are happy paying a monthly subscription. A custom website is the better choice when your business has workflows Shopify does not handle well, such as B2B quotes, bookings, custom pricing, or a close link with your shop's billing system.

Neither is better in general. The right choice depends on what you sell, how you sell it and what you want to own.

What Shopify does well

Shopify gives you hosting, security, a checkout and an admin panel in one subscription. Themes look professional, and there are apps for reviews, shipping, WhatsApp and marketing. For a straightforward online store, you can launch quickly with very little technical work.

Where Shopify costs add up

The subscription is only the starting point. Many useful features come from paid apps, each with its own monthly fee, and premium themes cost extra. Depending on your plan and payment setup, transaction fees can apply on top of the payment gateway's own charges.

Check Shopify's current India pricing and the fees of every app you will need, and add them up for a full year before deciding. Many store owners are surprised by the total.

What a custom website does well

A custom website is built around your exact process. Typical reasons Indian businesses choose one: catalogue websites where buyers request a quote instead of checking out, wholesale and retail prices for different customers, booking or appointment systems, multi-language sites such as English and Tamil, and stock that stays in sync with the shop's POS.

You own the code and the data, and there is no platform subscription. You do still pay for hosting and for changes you want made later.

Where a custom website costs more

A custom build usually costs more upfront than setting up a Shopify theme, and it takes longer to launch. Every new feature has to be designed and built rather than installed from an app store. It also needs a reliable developer for updates and support.

A simple way to decide

Choose Shopify if: you sell a standard product catalogue to consumers, you want to launch in days, and the monthly costs make sense for your sales volume.

Choose a custom website if: you sell B2B or by quote, you need bookings or custom pricing, you want English and Tamil, you need tight integration with billing or inventory, or you want no platform subscription.

Many businesses also start with a simple custom business website (from ₹12,000 with us) and add a store later, once they know online sales are worth the investment.
