Why app quotes range so widely
Ask a few app development companies in Chennai what an app costs and the answers can differ many times over. One may be pricing a simple app with a handful of screens. Another may be pricing two mobile apps, an admin dashboard, payments, live tracking and notifications. All of them are called "an app", but the work behind them is very different.
You will get quotes you can compare if you first write down who uses the app, what each of them needs to do and what has to happen behind the scenes. That short brief does more to control cost than any discount.
The number of apps hidden inside one idea
Many app ideas are really several products. A delivery service needs a customer app, a rider or staff app and a dashboard for the people running it. A booking app may need a customer app plus a panel for the business to manage slots. Each one has its own screens, permissions and testing.
Our own Wingman platform is designed this way: a customer app, a rider app and an operations platform that share one set of rules. Counting these parts up front is the quickest way to understand why one quote is higher than another.
Features that move the price most
Some features are much more work than they look. Live location tracking, chat, payments and refunds, offline use, role-based access, multiple languages such as English and Tamil, and connections to your existing billing or accounting software all add design, development and testing time.
Simple login, profile pages, lists of products or services and contact forms are comparatively quick. If your budget is tight, launch with the features that let customers complete the main job, then add the rest once real users show you what matters.
Android, iOS or both
In India most customers use Android, so many businesses launch there first. If your customers are spread across both, a cross-platform app built from one codebase usually costs less than two fully separate native apps, while still being published on the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
Sometimes a mobile-friendly web app is enough. If people use the service occasionally and don't need notifications, the camera or offline access, a web app avoids store approvals and works on any phone through the browser.
Design, backend and admin work
The screens customers see are only part of the job. Most apps need a backend that stores data, sends notifications and handles payments, plus an admin panel where your team manages users, orders and content. Ask each developer whether these are included, because a low quote sometimes leaves them out.
Good design also takes time. Clear flows, readable screens in sunlight and large tap targets for people using the app on the move all reduce support calls later.
Running costs to budget for
Ask for running costs separately from the build price. These usually include server hosting, the Google Play developer fee and Apple developer membership, SMS or WhatsApp messages, maps and location services, and payment-gateway transaction fees. Each provider sets its own prices, so check current rates before you launch.
Agree on support and updates too. Android and iOS release new versions every year, and apps need small updates to keep working well. At ByteeCraft Studios, support is free for the first year, and after that a six-monthly maintenance fee is confirmed in your written quote.
Who owns the app and the code
Before you sign, ask who owns the source code, who holds the store accounts and where the data is hosted. The store listings should be under your own Google and Apple developer accounts, so the app stays yours if you change developers.
For our custom projects, the client owns the project code once it is fully paid, and we hand over the repository and documentation. Reusable components we bring from earlier work stay ours, with the rights you need to use them in your app.
How to get a quote you can compare
Send every developer the same brief: who the users are, the main things each user does, Android, iOS or both, payments and integrations, languages and who supplies content such as text and photos. Ask for a written quote that lists the apps and panels included, the timeline, third-party costs and support terms.
ByteeCraft Studios is an app and custom software development company in Chennai, working with businesses across Tamil Nadu and abroad. We have built ByteCraft POS, Feerivo fee management and the Wingman mobility platform. We don't publish a fixed app price, because one number would not be honest across such different projects. Share your idea and we will send a written, itemised quote before any work begins.
